Skills Development and Community Empowerment

Do you enjoy teaching and sports? Are you interested in social work and community development but also do not shy away from administrative tasks and work in an office? This project might be right for you! You would support the versatile activities of a local NGO aiming to improve the life of young people as well as that of their community. You should have training or experience in education, project management, fundraising, social marketing, ICT, communications, and photography or video recording.

Located in the Zambian town of Livingstone, the local non-profit New Hope Waves aims to improve the living conditions of children, youth and of their families. New Hope Waves targets urban, as well as rural communities marked by unemployment and poverty and aims to empower local young people and their families. To this end New Hope Waves young people’s education: The organisation teaches ICT classes, provides orphans with scholarships, and assists young people in starting their own income-generating activities. It also engages young people in sports and recreational activities, runs workshops on health issues and currently plans to build a shelter and community training centre for orphans and other vulnerable children. New Hope Waves has four employees and is supported by seven additional local volunteers.

As a GLEN participant, you would first of all be involved in the organisation’s educational activities. You would teach ICT skills to the initiative’s young beneficiaries, give lessons on the topic of social businesses, and participate in teaching sessions at community schools. Furthermore, you would have the opportunity to conduct sports and recreational activities with community youth and be involved in the organisation’s activities with regard to elderly care. Apart from these ‘hands-on’ tasks in the field of education and social work, you would contribute to the organisation’s project management, fundraising, and social marketing activities, as well as communication work. This also includes maintaining the website and documenting the non-profit’s activities through video recording, taking photographs and writing reports.

The scheduled time for the internship is three months between August and October 2018.

Training and seminars prior to the internship will be held in English.

The GLEN team will be comprised of one Polish participant and one German participant.
