Promoting organic farming techniques and health education
Are you passionate about gender equality? Then you should read this project description. For this project, we are looking for two participants who enjoy working in a dynamic team and have very good English skills. To participate you should be familiar with organic farming techniques and have knowledge of integrated pest management. Alternatively, you would have a background in healthcare or knowledge of sexual reproductive health.
The Women’s Organisation for Rural Development (WORD) is a charity organisation working toward the realization of women’s empowerment and gender equality. WORD was founded in 1991 and is based in the town of Pothanur in Tamil Nadu State in southern India. WORD strives to improve the lives of women and girls, especially in rural areas, by implementing programmes in the areas of health, education, and environmental protection, with an emphasis on farming techniques and water management. Moreover, WORD stands up for the rights of Dalits, whose community members are placed at the bottom of India’s caste system. Currently, WORD has seventeen staff members and seven volunteers working on various programmes. The organisation’s work is supported by, among other funders, the Jeevika Trust, a registered charity in the UK.
As a GLEN participant, you would primarily support WORD in implementing its organic farming and water management project. In this context, you would assist WORD staff members in conducting training sessions for village farmers focusing, for example, on vermicompost making, soil testing, and mulching. In order to demonstrate and apply new farming skills, you would also work in the fields. Beyond this, you would participate in raising awareness among adolescent girls living in rural areas of issues of reproductive health. The documentation of activities and participation in group discussions with community members would also be among your tasks.
The scheduled time for the internship is from August until October 2018.
Trainings and seminars prior to the internship will be held in English.
The GLEN tandem will be comprised of one French participant and one German participant.
