Capacity building and information management for a sustainable rural community development

GLEN combines mutual learning in the Global North and Global South with inner-European exchange. European tandems from Czech Republic, Estonia, France, Hungary, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia as well as Germany form the project teams during a three-month internship in the Global South. They also visit three seminars together, where English is the working language. These experiences of peer-to-peer learning and a change of perspective are the foundation for GLEN participant’s Global Learning Activity.

Are you enthusiastic about information management? This project focuses on information management and capacity building in rural communities. You will transfer knowledge and support the set-up of an information management system. You should have prior experiences in (adult) education. Strong intercultural communication skills are also needed for this project.

The Sustainable Rural Community Development Organization (SURCOD), placed in the Nsanje district in the Southern region of Malawi, will welcome and host you. SURCOD is devoted to improving the livelihood of rural communities through empowerment. SURCOD was founded in 2010, employs 9 staff members and builds on a network of over 30 volunteers. The non-governmental organisation (NGO) operates in collaboration with other public and social service stakeholders. Current activities include training, education, and entertainment measures. SURCOD tackles different areas of social life including agriculture, food security and economic issues. The NGO also focuses on social services in education and health, including water and sanitation for the communities. Climate change, cultural empowerment and gender equality are additional working areas of SURCOD.

You will be responsible for spreading and sharing knowledge on information management within selected communities. Your target audience will primarily be volunteers within community based organizations. In order to do so, you will design pedagogical capacity building programmes and awareness increasing activities on different topics that you can choose yourself – they just need to be related to the working fields of SURCOD. You will also establish a monitoring and management system for information. Finally, you will assist in implementing the developed information management system. The volunteers will approach you with many open questions they might have and possibly request feedback and further input. Please bring your own laptop. Concrete tasks will be coordinated with SURDOC before your internship starts.

The scheduled time period for the internship is three months between August and October 2017.

Trainings and seminars prior to the internship will be held in English.

Then GLEN tandem will be formed by a Hungarian and a German participant.
