Community empowerment for sustainable development

GLEN combines mutual learning in the Global North and Global South with inner-European exchange. European tandems from Czech Republic, Estonia, France, Hungary, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia as well as Germany form the project teams during a three-month internship in the Global South. They also visit three seminars together, where English is the working language. These experiences of peer-to-peer learning and a change of perspective are the foundation for GLEN participant’s Global Learning Activity.

Are you interested in rural development, social enterprises and civic education? This project is directed towards people experienced in rural development, sustainable ecology and civic education. You should have knowledge in community mobilization and social transformation. In addition, you have firm skills in communication, documentation and the use of social media tools. Moreover, you possess relevant skills regarding social enterprise development as well as the promotion of small scale business management.

The partner organisation Community Initiative for Sustainable Development (COMINSUD) works for over 19 years in grassroots political empowerment, dealing with the topics of gender, sustainable environmental management, good governance and information policy. Current projects include land governance and the rights to food, water sanitation and hygiene, as well as gender, local governance and decentralization, human rights, environmental education, conflict management and civil peace. The internship will take place in the densely populated North West region of Cameroon, in the capital Bamenda.

As GLEN intern, you can choose according to your competences and motivation among three main areas of activities:

(1) Social enterprise: in the area of ‘social enterprise’ you will contribute in the process of setting up a community training centre on social enterprise development. Here, you would also be engaged in identifying and establishing contacts with partners and stakeholders in supporting social enterprise initiatives and in setting up a base of structures that facilitate the implementation of social enterprises.

(2) Communication: if you choose ‘communication’ as area of your internship you will be documenting past realizations and set up a system of collecting and presenting information, including social media communication.

(3) Human rights and democracy: the area of ‘human rights and democracy’ offers you the chance to organize discussions and debates on the practice of democracy, governance and citizen engagement. You will also participate in human rights/peace building monitoring and reporting at grassroots level as well as writing case stories. Furthermore, the mobilization of youth and women for the election in 2018 will be among your activities.

The scheduled time period for the internship is three months between July and September 2017.

Trainings and seminars prior to the internship will be held in English.
