Craft and Rural Development – Kente Weaving
GLEN combines mutual learning in the Global North and Global South with inner-European exchange. European tandems from Czech Republic, Estonia, France, Hungary, Ireland, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia as well as Germany form the project teams during a three-month internship in the Global South. They also visit three seminars together, where English is the working language. These experiences of peer-to-peer learning and a change of perspective are the foundation for GLEN participant’s Global Learning Activity.
Are you interested in rural development, craft and social business? This project aims at assisting local weavers in the production of kente and to build a marketing structure for the kente fabric. Kente is a typical textile in Ghana. You should have previous knowledge in arts/craft and clothing including weaving and designing as well as internet marketing and selling.
The host organization Volunteers for Amelioration of Rural Areas (VARAS) works with 3 permanent staff and up to 10 volunteers, depending on the project. VARAS offers community services in the region, teaches in schools, delivers health care, creates rural employment and builds classrooms, washrooms and computer centers. The organization’s goal is to eradicate poverty and foster social awareness and development.
The internship is versatile in its tasks and touches many aspects of kente weaving. You will assist local weavers in the production of kente, work on new ideas on designs of weaving and try to find ways to build a decent structure in marketing and selling of the kente fabric, both locally and internationally. Additionally, you will work with members from the organization on financial discipline to enable rural development. The internship will take place in the Volta region of Ghana, in the town of Agotime Akpokofe/Kpetoe.
The scheduled time for the internship is three months between July and October 2017.
Training and seminars prior to the internship will be held in English.
The GLEN team will be formed by two German and one Lithuanian participant, working with a Ghanaian participant.
