The course of the cycle

The core activity of GLEN is the Multipliers Training Cycle. It consists of training seminars, an internship in the Global South and a phase of transferring the experience gained to global education activities in Europe.

The uniqueness of GLEN's training offer lies in the combination of
  • training and practice
  • North-South exchange with an inner-European dimension
  • quality global education training with an innovative, participatory style

In order to see the offers of internships worldwide, see the section Internships in the Global South.

2. Training seminars

April - June 2010: The training cycle begins for the participants with 2 training seminars which equip them with skills needed as global educators and prepare them for their internships in the Global South.

Seminars in the GLEN multipliers training cycle 2010:
  • English speaking GLEN group
30th April to 5th May 2010 in Werftpfuhl, Germany
7th to 12th June 2010 in Kostelecke Horky, Czech Republic
  • French speaking GLEN group
12th April to 17th April 2010 in Fayl Billot, France
8nd to 13th June 2010 in Bessunger Forst, Germany

Contents of the training seminars:
  • Global Education, global issues and development: theory on content and methods as well as practice,
  • getting to understand GLEN more,
  • team work with tandem/trinom partner(s) and within preparation group as such,
  • intercultural communication,
  • preparation to hosting country (culture, history, Global Education issues),
  • getting to know the team partner(s) and other participants from different European countries
  • information on logistical and administrative preparation of the internship in the Global South
  • evaluation methods etc.

The training seminars are hosted by lead facilitators on the GLEN partners’ behalf. They are accompanied by a team of tutors – usually former GLEN participants. Concerning the content, the seminars are formed by the participants; active support is the be-all and end-all for all participants. Role plays and scenarios, inter-active and participatory methodology have a high value at the seminars. Furthermore, experts and other people are invited.

3. Internship in the Global South

Usually between July and October the internship of the GLEN participants with partner organisations in Africa, Asia or South-East Europe takes place. The internship takes three months.
Once the participants have been selected, it is their responsibility to get in contact with their hosting organisation and to organise on their own their internship in the Global South (accomodation, flight, visa, etc...). The committed collaboration and flexible co-operation of the participants with the partner in the host country is crucial. For the partner organisation, GLEN participants are generally short-time volunteers who at first do not necessarily know about the circumstances in the country but contribute with their previous experience, some skills and committed work. In many cases the internship is organised like a practical training in which participants join the local organisation's ongoing activities, in other cases GLEN participants conduct a small rather independent project, under guidance of the local partner organisation. Some internships focus on a field study, e. g. contributing to the construction of solar plants, evaluating a programme or collecting materials for a photo exhibition.
The willingness to learn, interest in exchange on a cultural, human and professional level, high motivation to contribute to the local organisation's work, a respectful attitude towards the local partners, and an ability to flexibly adapt to unfamiliar environments and unexpected situations are among the main requirements for the internships in the Global South.
After their return from the Global South, participants hand in an evaluation report and start conducting public global education activities using their experience from the internship in the Global South.

4. Global education practical phase in Europe

Between November 2010 and March 2011 the participants engage in global education in their home country and in Europe. Each participant needs to implement a Global Education activity in his/her home country or in Europe, supported by his/her tutor.

For this engagement there are several options: GLEN participants may become involved in global education programmes of their local GLEN organisation or in European activities of the whole GLEN network.
The particular activities of each GLEN cycle participant depend on the interest and skills of the participant, on issues and conditions in the respective society and on needs of the local GLEN partner organisation. Global education activities should contribute to increasing the target groups awareness and understanding of global interdependency and encourage them to become active responsible citizens. The experience from an internship in a developing/transition country is a very good basis for global education in Europe.
The participants already get Global Education guidelines and support during the training seminars. This enables them to carry out their Global Education practical phase.
Note: Expectations and support of each partner organisation towards the participants' activity in global education in the Global Education practical phase differ. If you wish to apply for the training cycle, please inquire at the GLEN partner organisation in your home country.

Examples of possible global education activities:
  • production and dissemination of a film or slide show
  • photo exhibition
  • workshops or activity days in schools
  • newspaper articles, radio or TV documentaries
  • seminars at university, with NGOs or else
  • contribution to campaigns, festivals, event days
  • many more

5. Evaluation of the internship in the Global South and of the activities in Global Education on the RENew seminar

In the end of March 2011 the RENew seminar - "Seminar for Review, Engagement and Networking" takes place.
All returned GLEN participants of the GLEN training cycle meet again for 4 days in order to evaluate their internship in the Global South as well as their Global Education activity. They will prepare their future engagement in global education, and exchange with former GLEN participants, people and institutions working in this field.
After the RENew, the GLEN participants are ready to act as Global Education multipliers on their own in Europe! The participants are invited to initiate, individually or together with other GLEN participants, their own global education projects in their home country or on a European level and to act as Global Actors in their everyday life!
