Get involved as Southern Partner!

By hosting GLEN interns in your organisation in the Global South!
GLEN qualifies multipliers in Global Education by combining training seminars with experiential learning in the South and action in Europe, for North-South and inner European exchange. For this, after two training seminars, the GLEN participants make an exchange with a partner organisation in a Southern country in order to be able to share their experiences with the population in Europe once they are back.
For this GLEN selects, trains and places bi-national tandems or international teams of young Europeans (mainly students, but also young jobholders) from its member countries for an internship with a clear task in countries in Africa, Asia and Southeast Europe. During the internship, the tandems or teams work for three months with local partner organisations in a certain field of global cooperation and development.
GLEN partner organisations in the Global South are organisations with:
- Interest in exchange with two-three students/young professionals from Europe.
- Guarantee that the internships consist of non-profit nature activities, such as community work, social, environmental or cultural assistance carried out by a non-profit making organisation or local authority.
- Sufficient organisational infrastructure to host two or three GLEN participants (offer of adequate working conditions, help participants to integrate into the project and orientate themselves in the new environment, conduct of the working process).
- Interest in global education and mutual learning
What are the benefits of this cooperation for the partner organisations in the Global South?
Internships are to promote mutual exchange and equal cooperation and give organisations the opportunity to work together with young committed students and/or young professionals and to assist them in getting personal experience in different realities of the development field. On the other side young Europeans will support your team by sharing their specific knowledge, and very often long-term partnerships develop out of the cooperation. The participants stay involved in global education after their return and promote the understanding and dialogue between North and South.
If an organisation is willing to support the participation of the local intern in the internship, who will work in cooperation with the European tandem, this initiative is welcomed by GLEN! But this is not obligatory, as the organisations need to carry the costs themselves.
Conditions
For their internship in hosting organisations, participants receive a small lump sum covering part of their living for three months and travel costs in the hosting country.
The internships are not to be understood as expert missions of development cooperation! The participants are no experts but active young Europeans with good qualifications and preparation who want to exchange their experience with you and learn more about global interdependencies and development issues and different perspectives on these, in order to do Global Education back in Europe.
The cooperation is based on personal exchange, that is why the GLEN network and the GLEN participants do not give any financial or material support to the Southern partner organisations.
If you are interested in becoming a partner organisation of GLEN by hosting GLEN interns in your organisation for three months, you need to fill in a internship proposal form and send it in via email to the representatives of the national GLEN member organisations in Europe. The application process starts every summer and finishes with the selection of the internships for the next year in the autumn. For 2012, the internships in the Global South have been selected. You can read the internship descriptions here.
