2010 Zambia: Education for Sustainable Learning
Host Country & Organisation: Zambia, United Church of Zambia
Participant: Jana Havlíčková
GLEN Member Organisation: INEX-SDA, Czech Republic
Time Frame: August – December 2010
The project “Education for sustainable learning” is situated in the southern province of Zambia, in the small rural village called Masuku. The duration of the internship is three months. Always one participant from Germany and one from another European country take part in the internship within the GLEN program. Masuku is peaceful, hardly accessible place in the middle of the bush (the nearest town is 70km dar connected by dusty road). The hist organization is United Church of Zambia, which runs the Masuku Secondary school – place of the internship. The core content of the internship is teaching on secondary school. Participants are involved in the education process and have the same role as the local teachers. They are given full responsibility including examining. marking, assessing preparation of schemes of work etc. Masuku Secondary school is a boarding school. Students stay in the village for the whole term (three months). All teaching staff usually live in Masuku together with their families. Therefore participants are also involved in the village and school community all the time. including participation on Sunday’s Church Service, Saturday’s entertainment, Monday’s Assembly devotion with teachers etc. Another challenge of this internship is an adaption on conditions in rural Zambian village. Usually there is no tap water, no shops and charcoal (open fire) is used for cooking in Zambian village. Masuku is not the exception. However, the advantage of Masuku is the electricity from solar panel which is used for lightening and water pumping. As the participants are regular teachers there, the results of the project are obvious. The special challenges are to deal with limited sources for teaching and living as well and to deal with the different culture and influence of religion on education.
