Time Frame: July – September 2010
The Shootback Internship took place in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya. Kenya is one of the stables african countries and despite of the constitution referendum in August, whole time of the Internship was pretty safe and peaceful. The GLEN participants had very good experience in so called Nairoberry and its inhabitants. The place of internship was situated in a quite poor suburb, close to the second biggest Kenyan slums of Mathare. The aim of this Internship was to work together with the youths, mostly living in slums, in the Shootback Project, which is one part of Mathare Youth Sports Association activities. The GLEN participants were running the photography and film – making workshops with one youth group, preparing workshops of basic photograph techniques for several groups of kids in other community centers of MYSA and meanwhile helping in a Shootback office with some of the daily tasks. Thanks to the local people, the GLEN Interns got the opportunity to explore how is the living in slum, under the extreme poverty line and that is what they consider as the fundamental experience of their stay in Kenya. GLEN Interns facilitated Youths to take lots of pictures, accompany them with stories and produce three short documentaries. All these outputs were presented at the end of Internship as a photo exhibition and screening with the title: Volunteering against Poverty in MYSA ́s community centre in Eastleigh.
